Landscape Tools

When it comes to landscape tools, there are several categories depending on the type of work you want to do, whether it is gardening or maintaining your yard. Here is an overview of some common landscape tools for different job needs:

 Gloves: This is one of personal preferences, all to achieve the same goal. To protect our hands and hopefully to prevent blisters. Some people do not like to wear gloves, I usually start   by wearing them, but find my self wanting to fell the connection with the earth and plant.

Pruning Gloves: I love to prune roses and after many prickles through the gloves, I have found that by using GOAT SKIN gloves the prickles do not penetrate and when wet or by sweat they do not shrink only get stiff, but quickly soften when worn.

1. Digging Tools

  • Shovel: Used for digging and moving soil, mulch, or gravel.  

Spade: Ideal for edging, digging trenches, and lifting sod.

  • Post Hole Digger: Used for digging deeper, narrow holes for posts and fences and 1-gallon plants.
  • Garden Fork: Good for loosening soil and aerating beds and compost.
  • Pickaxe: Used to break up heavy soil for planting.
  • Trowel(s), Hori Hori Knife: Great for small digging tasks, planting, or weeding.

2. Cutting & Trimming Tools

  • Pruning Shears (Bypass): Used for trimming shrubs and small trees.
  • Pruning Shears (Anvil): Used for trimming shrubs and small trees.
  • Hedge Shears: For trimming larger shrubs and hedges. Good Old Fashioned Hedge Trimmers are great.  Especially good for area of no noise and gas emissions.
  • Loppers: Heavy-duty pruners for thicker branches.
  • Pruning Saw: For cutting branches, limbs, use proper cutting techniques and safety measures. 

3. Mowing & Lawn Care

  • Lawn Mower: Used to keep grass trimmed to a uniform height.
  • String Trimmer (Weed Whacker): For trimming grass in hard-to-reach areas like edges and corners.
  • Leaf Blower: Helps clear leaves, grass clippings, or debris from walkways or lawns.

4. Soil & Mulch Handling

  • Wheelbarrow: Essential for transporting soil, mulch, plants, or other materials.
  • Rake(s): Helps level soil, spread mulch, or gather debris. Bow rake, spring rake, Grading rake. Each has it purpose in its application for projects.
  • Pitchfork: Used to move material. Various styles.

5. Landscaping Edging Tools

  • Edger: For creating clean, defined edges along flower beds, sidewalks, and lawns.                 
  • Spade Shovel: Used for to place garden borders, edging.

6.  A Must Have

  • Garden Hose(s) & Sprinkler(s) or Automated System: For watering plants or your lawn.
